Plenary Presentation: Sharing Your Stories – The Power of Public Narrative
What sparks meaningful connection and conversation? More often than not, it’s a story. Rooted in the work of Marshall Ganz, this engaging plenary introduces Public Narrative — a powerful framework for intentional storytelling that helps us connect, reflect, and inspire action. At its heart is a simple but transformative structure: Self, Us, Now — a way to share personal experiences that build community and invite others to join you in making something better. Whether you're gathering around a kitchen table, speaking up at a community meeting, or having a heartfelt chat with a friend, the ability to share your story with purpose can open doors to understanding and collaboration. This session is an invitation to explore how your story can deepen conversations, strengthen relationships, and spark change — right where you are. Amrit, Tania, and Brian are excited to bring the power of public narrative to the Alberta NDP Convention!

Workshop: Sharing Your Stories: Public Narrative
Instructors: Brian Chang, Amrit Parhar, Tania Tong Liu
Join experienced instructors for an introductory workshop to storytelling as a powerful motivator in organizing people and communities. Marshall Ganz pioneered the idea of a public narrative. Learn about this structured approach to storytelling that situates stories in a context of self, us, and now. We will help you bring a personal story forward, with the intention of sharing, and asking something specific of the listeners. We'll spend time learning through Coaching Leadership, a radical departure from typical top-down experiences of leadership, coaching recognizes and enforces a decentralized power model based on humility and a desire for constant growth without personalizing and demonizing fault, mistakes, and responsibility. And spend time on the process of emotional intelligence, how we use emotions and feelings in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social management. Together, we'll give you some key tools on getting started in putting your own public narrative together and supporting others in developing one.
